At Kidlandlee there is a 2.5kW rated wind generator on a 6.5m high tower.
There is also 880Wp of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels. As we are off grid,
both these renewable energy sources are charging a 48VDC Battery Bank. From
the energy stored in the batteries a 4500W Charger Inverter Unit provides
230VAC power to run the cottages. In the event of a period of no wind and
no sun then the Charger Inverter Unit will automatically call for the stand
by Engine Generator which will then supply the electrical load in the
Cottages, and at the same time recharge the batteries.
By heating and cooking with other fuel sources then a 2.5kW wind charger and
around 1kWp of solar PV power will go a long way to make us self-self
sufficient here in the North East of the UK.
The cottages are also equipped with energy-saving light bulbs, and supplied
with environmentally-friendly cleaning materials.
