The Area

Kidlandlee is in Northumberland National Park, a landscape of hills, river valleys, wood, forest, farmland and moor. It stretches from the Cheviot Hills to Hadrians Wall and is rightly known as ‘the land of the far horizons’.

‘Officially’ tranquil, this part of Northumberland is remote and peaceful. There is endless scope for walking - from strenuous hill climbs to strolling along flat river valleys, cycling and riding, bird watching and simply chilling out.

With a colourful and passionate past, there is a mass of historic interest right across Northumberland: brilliant Roman sites (Chew Green, Hadrian’s Wall), remains from Neolithic and Bronze Age burials to hillforts, farmsteads, field systems and deserted medieval villages (excellent information on National Park website and Northumberland County Council website, links above).

Within a short driving distance is the magical Northumbrian coast, with dramatic castles rearing up from rocky foundations, a coastal path, wide empty golden sands, Holy Island and the Farne Islands. Head north for the spectacular walled Berwick Upon Tweed. Contrast the lively resort of Seahouses (eat fresh fish and chips on the beach) with the picturesque village of Bamburgh a little further north (top up with a cream tea). South is Craster, with a small harbour, the well-worn path to Dunstanburgh Castle, and the fish smokery where you can buy the legendary Craster kippers – and other fishy products.

And finally - much of the beauty of Northumberland depends on farming, so it makes sense to support the businesses which help to keep the farmers in business and the landscape in good heart. There are super-stores – but there are also plenty of shops selling local produce, several Farmers Markets, and several farm shops, some with restaurants alongside. Please do support them.
